Thanks to the urging of Tracy Walker, beginning today, I plan to write a monthly post for our Outreach at Third blog. Truth be told, I’ve left it in the idea stage for long enough; Tracy has been urging me to do this for quite a while. By virtue of my role on the church staff, I have the rare privilege of keeping my finger on the pulse of all of Third Church’s outreach ministries – in education, hunger, homelessness, peace and justice, and advocacy.
So it’s time for me to commit to this discipline – the discipline of reflecting on and putting into words the ways that Third Church reaches out into the community to share God’s love in tangible ways. It’s time for the work of some unnoticed, yet faithful servants to be recognized. It’s time for some untold stories to be shared. It’s time for new ministries to be highlighted. It’s time for our community partners to be celebrated. It’s time to think about the relationships we are building in our community. It’s time for you to know what I have come to know – that God is at work through the faith in our hearts and the work of our hands.
Speaking of time, here are some Outreach learning and service opportunities I hope you will make time for this month:
- Attend the Urban Presbyterians Together Education Night on Thursday, October 15 (6:30pm at Laurelton Presbyterian Church) to consider ways urban and suburban churches can partner on programming for children
- Hear Dale Maddock, David Tennant, and special guests tell the story of the Field of Dreams urban summer camp-out during the Third Church Sunday Seminar at 9:30am on Sunday, October 18
- Fight hunger in Rochester – create your Crowdrise page to raise funds for the East Avenue Grocery Run, register to run/walk the race, or sign up to volunteer
- Pray for our teams traveling to New Orleans the last two weeks of October to continue rebuilding after Katrina, and for our team traveling to Kenya from October 16-26 to renew the covenant with our partner congregation, the Kihumo Church
